subbstrat is a 26-year-old self-taught visual artist who lives and works in Paris and Brussels.
“One day, my father drew a castle on a piece of paper. I was really impressed, especially by the details of the two towers, which gave the sketch a magical quality.
All children draw. I continued until it became necessary for me to draw things accurately, in an almost scientific way. My drawings are as precise as possible. All these details are creators, frameworks. They are essential and, in my opinion, it is through them that the beauty of the subject comes into play. In this way, I think I can convey all the life and poetry that I see in them.
Skin and materials are my favourite subjects. There's a lot of depth on a surface. A whole universe on a ring or in the fold of a pair of jeans.
Learning to draw on my own gave me a technique that I now use in my painting. Drawing means observing a lot. Then you have to make all sorts of lines and strokes, which, put end to end, take shape. In the end, everything around us is made up of lines and strokes. They are separations, contact zones between one space and another, one skin and another. The line is the horizon, the lines are the hand, the strokes are drawn...”
